He was Dying. There was nothing he could do about it. Years of battle and magic had destroyed his body, and his soul was finally letting go.
He considered letting it happen. Allowing his story to end naturally. Of course, these thoughts were quickly shoved down.
No. He must live. He must fight on, but how?
His eyes fell on his mask, the mask his loyal servant made to strike fear into his enemies. It stared at him with blank eyes and a gaping smile, mocking him. A mask never dies. Long after his name has faded from the memory of history, that mask will remain, smiling out into the darkness. Anger washed over him, and he grabbed his mask and held it over his head, ready to smash it against the floor. To shatter its blackened eyes against the stones. Suddenly, a thought struck him. He lowered the mask again and stared at its smiling face. A smile spread across his face to match it as he turned the mask over and put it on. His Ice blue eyes stared through the eye holes with raw determination. He had a new plan.
A mask never dies.
And neither will he.
