Rat atat atat atat, the hooves of his stead pounded the dirt path as he lit across the night. His gloved hands grasped the reigns with all his strength as the feathers in his hat waved violently in the wind.
The Highwayman led his horse quickly through a field and towards a palace. His eyes needed no lantern, and the guards had no prayer of seeing him. He slowed his horse. Walking it towards a window, silently praying to whoever would listen to a thief like him.
One light in the window, a fire burned in his heart as he nearly yelled in joy. His horse trotted to the window. Stopping just under it, The Highwayman made a cricket chirp. The window crept open, and he stood on his saddle as her face appeared.
She glowed brighter than the most brilliant star, her smile could shake the heavens, and her laugh would cause even the vilest beast to have joy. She granted a smile to The low Highwayman, who removed his cap in her sight.
“Your Majesty,” he said in a hushed whisper. The fair Princess granted him another smile as he replaced his hat and held out his hand. The Princess stepped out the window and fell into his arms. He helped her onto the horse, and she wrapped her arms around his chest. With a quick flick of his wrist, his stead moved away from the window and back to the field.
The Highwayman and The Princess rode in the moonlight. The Princess laughed as the horse gained speed. The Highwayman smiled. He will savor this moment until the moon gives way to breaking dawn.
They rode together down the field.
Rat atat atat atat.
