Rescued By Grace

In times of chaos, sometimes we need others to offer their help to pull us out of the pits of despair, and (if you are religious), who is more qualified to do that than God?

The world is crashing down on me,
I’m helpless in its current.
I cling to my head, only hoping
to protect myself from the waves.

I can’t keep my head above the water
things are happening too fast.
the undertow drags me down again,
I fear I’ll never get back up

I slept in late and missed church.
Lord, I’m just so tired.
God feels further than ever before.
Do I even want to reach for Him?

A thirty-minute prayer meeting,
my head breaks the water’s surface.
I feel the waves coming down again,
and I take a deep breath.

A hand catches me before I go under.
A voice calms me before I panic
A love envelops me before hate’s final blow
I didn’t reach for God.
He came and found me.

The world continues crashing
it whirls against my feet
I watch as calm replaces fear
safe again on the water’s edge.
