My eyes once shone like stars. Gleaming from the night sky.
Lighting the perfect world in their glow. The golden days gone too soon.
As life progressed, and I grew up
My eyes saw that world with new light,
Darkness began to grow. The golden glow of all that childhood was, clouded with knowledge and understanding. My shining eyes started to fade, blotted out by the world. They grew darker with every ounce of understanding.
Soon not even my laugh could light them up
People left, and the darkness grew
Emotions grew cold, and the darkness grew
Friends become strangers, and strangers become enemies
And the darkness grew
I realize my friends can’t stand me
And the darkness took over
I desperately held the fading glow, but my grasp just darkened them faster.
The clouds have covered the rich night sky. And my eyes sit like blackened stones, like magma cooled to rock.
If you meet a child with eyes like stars, treasure the moment. For shining eyes are a childhood gift, soon stolen away by life.

My Eyes Once Shone Like Stars
As I have stated in a previous post, Poetry needs a particular mindset for me, and as a result, most of my poems have a darker or sadder undertone. This poem is a lament of lost innocence that a child goes through as they become old enough to recognize the world’s problems. Again, as in my last post, this is not my current mental state but rather the result of a wave of emotions I experienced a while ago. Right now, I am in a good place mentally.
